ARTIST STATEMENT
I believe each person is layered with a mix of all possible things and I have a big interest in how identities are formed through genes and social constructs. I grew up in a household with Indian, Surinamese, German and Dutch customs. To find answers about my own identity, I am researching for what it means to share common physical and social geography. How are we different from each other, how are we all connected and how can we relate to each other?
As a multidisciplinary artist with a strong foundation in documentary photography and (freelance) producer, I focus on identities within communities by making installations in which I bring together photography and audiovisual work. The colourful, strong and resilient portraits and objects tell stories about cultures, traditions and identities that are not always seen or understood. My work is about given collective visibility by creating a community and generating recognition among other people.
